Dr. Frances starts with a thorough assessment.

The first part of the assessment process involves an in-depth initial interview to gather information about your child and family. Most times this is done right over the phone.

Selecting the right independent educational / therapeutic consultant is vital when parents need to find a specialized program or school, especially when parents feel the need to find a program or school outside of their home community (that is, when all local options have been exhausted).

Competent and ethical independent educational / therapeutic consultant, such as Dr. Franceshave specialized training and expertise; and provide a thorough assessment and comprehensive information to help parents make wise choices.

Please be aware that some people who call themselves educational consultants, however, have little formal education and training, and some may actually be working on a commission basis to place children in certain programs. These consultants may have conflicts of interest because of the way they are paid for their services or may be biased in favor of certain kinds of programs and schools that might not be best for their clients.

We encourage you to ask other parents about their experience with the consultant, not with the program that was selected for their child. There is no one-size fits all when it comes to programs. Rely on parents whose judgment you respect and whose values and parenting philosophy match your own.

Contact specialty organizations that focus on issues closely related to your teen’s special needs. Organizations that focus on developmental disabilities, learning disorders and trauma may be able to recommend consultants or provide information on a consultant you are considering.

Ask for a copy of the consultants Ethical Guidelines that govern their actions in their relationships with students and families, with schools, and with colleagues.

A professional independent educational consultant does not accept any compensation from educational institutions, wilderness programs or any other type of treatment facility, for placement of a child.

Here is a list of questions that parents may want to ask when selecting an independent educational / therapeutic consultant:

Does the independent educational / therapeutic consultant have any formal ties to specific programs and schools (which may lead to biased referrals and conflicts of interest), or does the educational consultant provide unbiased advice and information so that a best placement is secured for the child?

How much contact will the independent educational / therapeutic consultant have with the parents while the teen is in a program or school?

How much experience does the independent educational / therapeutic consultant have?

What is the independent educational / therapeutic consultant’s educational and professional background?  Does the consultant have at least a master’s degree in a mental health field or in education?

What are the full consulting costs?  Does the independent educational / therapeutic consultant charge by the hour or by the placement?

What does the educational / therapeutic consultant do to monitor the teen’s progress during their enrollment in the program or school?  How often does the consultant visit the program or school during the teen’s stay? How often are they in contact by phone for regular updates and what do those updates consist of?

What specific services will the independent educational/therapeutic consultant provide?

At the end of the call and after checking references, do you feel at ease and comfortable with the educational consultant and is this someone you can trust with your emotions and with your proposed financial investment?

Posing these questions can greatly enhance the likelihood that parents will find professional, ethical, and skilled independent educational consultants.
